Fireworks and other Fourth of July Hazards
There are a few hazards associated with the 4th of July in dogs and cats. The bang of fireworks can spark fear behaviors in dogs that can range from mild and non-harmful behaviors to destructive behaviors. The mild and non-harmful behaviors include whining, keeping close to their owners for support and trying to seek hiding places. Some dogs when afraid can jump through windows and acquire lacerations. Other dogs may run away.
Cats can be especially fearful and hide. Other cats may run outside or become lost.
The best thing you can do to prevent injury to your dog or cat is to allow them to begin indoors in a quiet are of your home. You can play background music to also white out the firework noises. There are CD’s created just for pets such as “music my pet”.
