The flowers are blooming, so that means we are sharing outdoor space with bees and wasps!  If your pet gets stung, it is common to experience some mild side effects.  Side effects may occur within minutes to hours after the sting.

  • Some non life-threatening reactions include:
    • Pain, swelling, redness, discomfort, and irritation at the sting site. You can apply an ice pack, or a bag of peas, or a cool moist towel to the area for 10 minutes to reduce the swelling.
    • Itching, head- shaking, and the presences of “hives” (itchy, rounded, swollen/raised areas on the skin). These can develop over the body. Some dogs will get swelling around their muzzle and eyes.
    • Call us and we may be able to give you an antihistamine dose over the phone in mild cases.
    • Some dogs need injectable doses of steroid and anti-histamines to help with the swelling and get relief.

  • Severe cases can quickly become life threatening. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, contact us at Granville Veterinary Clinic (740-587-1129) immediately.
